WhatsApp will soon let you post status updates directly in group chats

Summary
  • WhatsApp is working on a feature to post status updates within group chats.
  • It’s currently in development on both Android and iOS beta builds.
  • The feature adds a “Group Status” button in group info for sharing media or text.
  • Updates are only visible to group members and are end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will take group interaction to another level. After rolling out the possibility to mention groups in status updates last year, the messaging platform is currently further working on developing a feature that will allow people to create statuses directly within group chats.

WABetaInfo first spotted the feature in the WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.25.20.6). The same feature appeared in iOS beta 25.19.10.76, stating that it may be in the testing phase between the two platforms.

Previously, users would be able to tag a group with their WhatsApp Status, sending a notification to all members, including those shown as blocked, with standard privacy options. While this feature enabled wide sharing, it was still dependent on individual statuses and did not provide direct group-specific visibility.

WhatsApp is now making it easier.

The new feature offers a new “Add group status” button right inside the group chat’s info page. Once it is live, you will be able to:

  • Share group status posts as photos, videos, text, or music.
  • Share content visible only to members of that specific group.
  • Keep your status content end-to-end encrypted.

How it will work

After it is available, here’s how the process is expected

  • Open a group chat.
  • Tap on the group name to access its info screen.
  • Select the Add group status” option.
  • Choose media or text to share.
  • Post your update, visible only to group members.

It provides the ability to share updates, reminders, or fun moments far more targeted and contextual, without cluttering your public status for all contacts.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp group statuses will be end-to-end encrypted, so they will be invisible to WhatsApp itself as well. Moreover, with the update, it will not be required to save others’ contacts; it can be helpful for a community group or an event-based chat.

When will it be available?

Currently, the group status update feature is still in development, with no release to beta testers. However, since it already appeared in Android and iOS beta, we expect a limited release to launch soon.
