Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has announced a new initiative to provide subsidized food to the city’s poor. The cornerstone of this initiative is the provision of roti, a staple food item, at a mere Rs2.
Governor Tessori unveiled this plan during a ceremony held on Sunday, stating that the process of providing roti at such a low cost will commence in various parts of the metropolis. He emphasized that this initiative is not just a temporary measure but a mission that the government is committed to pursuing.
As part of the plan, up to 300 tandoors, traditional ovens used to bake roti, will be established across the capital of Sindh. These tandoors will sell roti at a subsidized price, making it more affordable for the economically disadvantaged.
In addition to this, Governor Tessori also announced that ration bags will be distributed among one hundred thousand deserving families in the port city. This move comes as Pakistan, a nation of over 250 million people, grapples with an escalating economic crisis characterized by high inflation and a depreciating currency. The crisis has made it increasingly difficult for people to afford basic commodities like food and fuel.
The situation was further exacerbated last year when large swathes of the South Asian nation were devastated by catastrophic floods, causing billions in economic damage and affecting millions of people.
Governor Tessori attended the entry test ceremony for the IT courses program at the Sindh Governor’s House. The program, which includes courses in web development, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse, has already seen hundreds of thousands of registrations. The first phase of the entry test was conducted for 10,000 children at the Governor’s House.
