In a bid to secure the transfer of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid is reportedly considering selling one of its two key midfield stars, Federico Valverde or Aurelien Tchouameni. The club’s president, Florentino Perez, is said to be willing to go to great lengths to bring Mbappe to the team, with the sale of either Valverde or Tchouameni potentially facilitating this dream transfer.
According to journalist Juan Ignacio G-Ochoa on Radio MARCA, the Spanish giants aim to recoup between €80 million and €100 million from the sale of one of these players to invest in the Paris Saint-Germain star. With an abundance of resources in the midfield, it seems that if a substantial offer comes along, either Valverde or Tchouameni could be sold.
Both players have been the subject of numerous proposals from clubs across Europe in recent weeks. However, until now, there has been no pressing need to sell either of them. Chelsea has shown repeated interest in Valverde, but the Uruguayan player, who dreams of one day wearing the captain’s armband, has not entertained such approaches in the past.
Tchouameni’s future at Real Madrid is also uncertain. Despite a decline in prominence towards the end of last season, manager Carlo Ancelotti reportedly sees him as a starter for the upcoming season and has declared him off the transfer market.
In addition to the potential sale of a key midfielder, Real Madrid is also reportedly looking to sell defender Ferland Mendy. After a disappointing 2022/23 season marred by injuries, the club hopes to recoup the €48 million they paid Olympique Lyon for his transfer in 2019. Despite interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, Mendy’s agent has dismissed these links, stating that the player is content at Real Madrid.
The final decision on which player will be sold to fund the Mbappe transfer remains to be seen. However, before any moves are made, Real Madrid will need Mbappe to take decisive action to push through his transfer to Spain.
