Portugal Plans To Ban Chinese Companies From 5G Telecoms Network

The Portuguese government intends to exclude Huawei from its national 5G network, according to a report based on a document from Portugal’s cyber security council.

The government is concerned about Huawei’s equipment’s security, and the paper advises prohibiting the use of high-risk kits, including those from Huawei and other businesses.

The proposal advises local carriers not to buy 5G technology from providers outside the European Union or from countries that are not members of NATO or the OECD.

This decision would be devastating for Huawei, which is the world’s biggest provider of 5G equipment. It would also have a significant influence on the Portuguese 5G rollout, since the country’s main cellular provider, Altice Portugal, has already agreed to employ Huawei equipment as part of its 5G deployment.

Huawei expressed displeasure with the Portuguese government’s decision but added that it intends to cooperate with the government to address its concerns. The corporation is still confident in its ability to fulfill security standards.

Portugal’s action underscores growing worldwide concern over Huawei’s equipment’s security and suspected vulnerability to Chinese eavesdropping.

Several nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan, have already banned or restricted Huawei from their 5G networks.

If the ban is enacted, Portugal will follow Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in prohibiting Huawei from participating in their 5G networks.

In conclusion, Portugal is intending to exclude Huawei from its 5G network due to security worries over its equipment, joining a growing list of nations taking similar measures against the Chinese business.
