The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) has recently come under intense national media scrutiny following a special report by the Punjab police. The report alleges that the university is a hotbed for drug abuse and sexual exploitation.
The investigation was initiated after the arrest of IUB’s chief security officer, followed by the detention of another official from the university on charges of drug possession. The latter, identified as the transport in charge of the university, was reportedly found with a small quantity of methamphetamine.
As the investigation continues, the Bahawalpur police have registered a case under the Narcotic Act and expanded their probe to apprehend all potential suspects. The special report suggests that a group of teachers at the university are implicated in drug trafficking and the sexual exploitation of female students and fellow staff members.
Evidence recovered during the investigation includes adult content on the accused’s mobile phone, various drugs, and party pills. The alleged group is accused of blackmailing and sexually exploiting students and teachers, distributing drugs, and organizing illicit parties involving dance and sex.
The report further alleges that the culprits filmed private clips of female students and staff members for blackmail purposes. Some students are also suspected of aiding these individuals in the distribution of drugs.
In response to these allegations, the Vice Chancellor of IUB has reached out to the top police officials in Punjab, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), requesting the formation of a high-level inquiry team to investigate the matter. He asserts that the accusations against the arrested officials are unfounded.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the university adheres to a strict zero-tolerance policy towards drug use and sexual harassment or exploitation. In light of the ongoing investigation, the university has requested a revamp of the investigating team.
