Some Instagram users have started seeing AI-generated images of themselves. According to reports, Meta’s popular social media platform has begun showing them via a new experimental feature. In a report from 404Media, a user posted on Reddit that when they came across a slideshow of AI-generated images, they seemed to be standing in front of ‘an endless maze of mirrors.’
The AI-generated post included a caption encouraging reflection: “You picture yourself in one endless maze of mirrors; you are at the centre of the star.”
Some users questioned whether it was real, asking how often it happened. But Meta told 404Media that the feature is part of an experiment, as Meta has been baking in broader plans it teased last September.
Last year, Meta revealed new AI tools, including a chatbot feature that could change image elements like clothes, backgrounds, and overall settings. However, the creative possibilities announced in the announcement were not concrete: it didn’t say that AI images would automatically arrive in a user’s feed.
Meta’s efforts to deepen AI in Instagram’s user experience are apparent in this experimental rollout, perhaps opening the door for more personalised, interactive content. With innovation leading the platform, this development raises questions about user consent, creative control, and the place of AI in digital identity design.
