The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced Chris Woakes, the standout performer from the Ashes series, as the Men’s Player of the Month for July 2023. Woakes outshone his fellow nominee and teammate Zak Crawley, as well as the rising star from the Netherlands, Bas de Leede, to secure this prestigious accolade.
Woakes’ recognition comes on the back of an exceptional performance in the Ashes series. Despite not being included in the first two matches, which saw England trailing 2-0, Woakes made a triumphant return to Test cricket after a year-long hiatus. His immediate impact was felt in the third Test at Headingley, where he claimed three wickets in each innings, including the crucial dismissals of Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja. His contribution with the bat was equally significant, scoring a vital 32 not out in a nail-biting chase, hitting the winning runs that kept England’s hopes alive in the series.
Woakes continued his impressive form into the fourth Test, claiming his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests during the first innings. Although the match ended in a draw due to rain, Woakes’ performance did not go unnoticed. He concluded the series on a high note, earning the Player of the Match award in the final Test at The Oval. Before causing havoc with the ball, the 34-year-old contributed a brisk 36 runs in the first innings.
In the series decider, Woakes picked up seven wickets, helping England level the series in a thrilling finish. Despite participating in only three matches, Woakes’ outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Series award. He finished the series with 19 wickets at an average of 18.15, along with a crucial 79 runs.
Upon receiving the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award, Woakes expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the team effort behind his individual success. He also expressed his delight at the public’s engagement with the series, appreciating the immense support he and his team received throughout the competition.
