Grammarly has unveiled a new suite of writing agents, individually-focused, AI-powered writing tools, extending the platform beyond grammar corrections. Announced on Monday, the tools are integrated into Docs, an AI-native writing interface, available for free to all users. However, the more advanced AI agents are to be available to the paid subscribers only, to use more personalized writing assistance.
The updated Grammarly is created more as an agentic, structured productivity system powered by AI, rather than just a suggestion tool. Users can now draft content and use specific agents within Docs to get their work proofread, check plagiarism, create citations, summarise, brainstorm, and provide detailed feedback.
According to Luke Behnke, VP of Product Management at Grammarly, the new approach positions the platform not as one that gives simple suggestions but as a set of intelligent agents that understand context and actively assist users to attain their communication goals. The goal is to simplify the workflows and offer more context-relevant writing assistance.
At launch, Grammarly introduced eight AI agents:
AI Agent | Feature |
---|---|
Reader Reactions | Simulates audience responses |
AI Grader | Provides grading-like evaluations |
Citation Finder | Checks and suggests citations |
Expert Review | Offers in-depth analysis |
Proofreader | Polishes grammar and clarity |
AI Detector | Identifies AI-written text |
Plagiarism Checker | Ensures originality |
Paraphraser | Refines tone and rephrases content |
Separating the AI support into these two different roles allows Grammarly to avoid redundancy in its prompts, making the overall tool more accurate and reliable. According to the company, these tools will assist students, professionals, and creators in writing more intelligently, quickly, and with more confidence.
