Google Introduces Google Vids, a Built-In Video Editor for Drive Users

Google announced Google Vids, a new built-in web-based video editor in Google Drive, which makes the Google Cloud platform even more versatile than ever. This feature allows users to edit videos directly in their browser without depending on third-party apps.

The rollout is currently available to Google Workspace Business and Enterprise accounts, Google Workspace Essentials, Google Workspace Nonprofits, Google Workspace Education, and Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans.

The launch of Google Vids is part of the company’s initiative to make Drive video-friendly. Earlier this year, Google introduced video transcripts, which automatically generate searchable text for uploaded videos. All these tools reflect Google’s aim to make Drive not only a storage but also a video-creation tool.

Supported Browsers and Eligible Accounts

Google Vids works across most web browsers, all features can be accessed on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge (Windows). Eligible Workspace tiers are

  • Business (Starter, Standard, Plus)
  • Enterprise (Starter, Standard, Plus)
  • Essentials (Enterprise Essentials, Essentials Plus)
  • Nonprofits and Education (Fundamentals, Standard, Plus)

Users with previously purchased Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons can also use the feature, even though those add-ons were discontinued in January.

Features and File Support

Google Vids comes with a set of editing tools like

  • Trimming clips
  • Adding background music
  • Inserting text
  • Combining videos, images, GIFs, and audio

It supports MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM formats, with some limitations.

  • Maximum clip length: 35 minutes
  • File size limit: 4GB
  • Up to 50 objects per project

Media are imported directly to Google Drive, Google Photos, a computer, or using web links. Projects are also saved as Vids files, with these files can be exported as standard video formats.

Advanced Editing and AI Integration

Beyond basic editing, Google Vids offers advanced options, including

  • Project outlines with stock media and voiceovers
  • Integration with Veo for clip creation
  • Screen recording and webcam capture
  • Preset templates
  • The ability to turn Google Slides presentations into videos

With Google Vids, the company is getting closer to having a video-focused platform that can integrate storage, collaboration, and content creation. Google is targeting businesses and educators who use Drive as a workspace, and may find themselves in a pinch without external editing tools, by reducing the need for external editing tools.
