Instagram has recently introduced a new safety feature aimed at reducing spam and harassment in Direct Messages (DMs). This feature restricts unknown users from sending more than one message, thereby preventing unwanted notifications from persistent strangers.
The new feature only allows text-based messages from individuals who are not followed by the user. The ability to share images, videos, or voice messages will only be enabled once the chat request is accepted or if the sender becomes a follower. This measure is particularly beneficial for larger accounts that frequently receive unsolicited messages from unfamiliar users.
Cindy Southworth, the head of Women’s Safety at Meta, Instagram’s parent company, stated, “We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox. That’s why we’re testing new features that mean people can’t receive images, videos, or multiple messages from someone they don’t follow until they’ve accepted the request to chat.”
This latest addition complements Instagram’s existing safety measures in DMs. One such feature is “Hidden Words,” which automatically filters out potentially offensive language in messages sent by unknown individuals, directing these messages to a separate folder for easy dismissal.
Another notable feature is “Restrict,” which provides users with a discreet way to avoid unwanted interactions without resorting to blocking. When this feature is activated, comments from a restricted user will only be visible to them, effectively limiting their ability to disrupt the user’s experience.
These updates underscore Instagram’s commitment to creating a safer and more controlled environment for its users, empowering them to manage their inboxes effectively and reduce unwanted interactions.
