Apple, Google Team Up To Tackle Unwanted Tracking Via AirTag

Apple and Google announced a collaboration to tackle the issue of unwanted monitoring using devices such as Apple’s AirTag, which have been exploited to follow individuals without their knowledge. Because of the gravity of the situation, the firms were forced to intervene.

Submitting an industry-standard proposal is one technique to avoid the exploitation of Bluetooth location-tracking devices for unwanted tracking. This’first-of-its-kind’ protocol will allow AirTag devices to interact with ‘unauthorized tracking detection and alarms across Android and iOS.’

Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, Eufy Security, and Pebblebee have all expressed support for the draft specification, which outlines best practices and recommendations for manufacturers that want to integrate such features in their devices.

This suggests that certain players in the industry are prepared to take action to solve the issue, which is a positive move.

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) will study and accept comments on Apple and Google’s draft standard for the next three months.

Following the review period, the companies will collaborate to incorporate feedback and release an official version of the unwanted tracking alerts specification by the end of this year. This will be accessible in future Android and iOS versions.
