X / Twitter Rolls Out Audio and Video Calls for Android Users, But Only for Paying Subscribers

X has begun rolling out audio and video calling capabilities to Android users, allowing them to place voice or video calls to other users within the app. However, there is a major catch – only paying subscribers on X’s Premium or Premium+ plans can initiate calls.

X’s new feature allows X users to make direct calls to other users from their profile pages. Any user, including those on the free tier, can receive incoming calls. But to place outgoing calls requires a monthly subscription fee of either $8 (Premium) or $16 (Premium+).

This aligns with CEO Elon Musk’s vision of molding X into an “everything app” with private communication playing a central role alongside public posts and live audio/video rooms. However, it remains unclear whether these direct calling functions are actually desired or used frequently by the platform’s user base.

Enabling calls between users could be useful for maintaining touch without having someone’s contact details. But it may also open the door for unwanted solicitation and harassment from bad actors. Users can adjust their settings to limit who can call them as security.

Ultimately, while the feature itself may hold promise, limiting it to paid users greatly reduces its value and reach. Unless it sees high adoption among subscribers, X’s long-distance call plans seem unlikely to be a true game changer.
