WhatsApp has rolled out a new AI feature named Writing Help to help users rephrase, proofread, or change the tone of their messages. The tool, based on Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access original chats or AI-generated rewrites, making conversations fully private.
What writing help can do
The new feature allows users to instantly create an alternative version of their messages in different styles: professional, funny, supportive, or even re-phrased.
WhatsApp shared an example
- Original message: “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.”
- AI alternatives: “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard,” or “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”
These comic rewrites highlight how the tool could make daily conversations more expressive and entertaining.
With the launch of Writing Help, WhatsApp aims to keep users spending more time on its platform and less on several external AI assistants such as ChatGPT.
However, opinions are divided. According to some critics, AI is more appropriate for professional or formal writing, while casual conversations should remain authentic and human.
How to use it
Users can access Writing Help by tapping the pencil icon while drafting a message. The rollout starts this week in English and is only available in some countries for now.
Meta has highlighted that privacy remains a top priority. With Private Processing, personal messages cannot be shared or viewed by anybody besides the sender and the recipient, even when AI is used.
