WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to add verified Instagram profile page links on their WhatsApp profile. The update will focus on increasing authenticity by integrating with Meta Accounts Centre, which has already been used by Facebook and Instagram for account verification.
First reported by WABetaInfo, feature has been spotted in WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.22.27 on Android. This further adds on to an earlier 2.25.7.9 Beta update, which added the feature of adding a regular Instagram profile link.
When the feature is enabled, verified Instagram links will show a badge of verification that proves that this account is owned by the user. To verify, users will see a Verify link option in their WhatsApp profile settings. When tapped, two options will appear as Yes, add verified link or No, add unverified link. When you select the verified option, it will redirect to the Meta Accounts Centre for authentication.
This feature could be useful for creators, influencers, and other public figures and reduce the risks of impersonation. However, it will still be possible to link to an Instagram account, even without verification, because the connection to the Accounts Centre will be optional.
The feature is similar to that of Discord, that lets users connect and authenticate on multiple platforms. Meta could possibly extend this to more than just Instagram to make sure accounts are more secure.
Apart from this, WhatsApp is working on several other new features that are yet to be added, such as threaded reply, missed call reminders, the option of importing profile picture via Facebook or Instagram, and even the ability to message those that are not on WhatsApp. Many of these updates are still in Beta and yet to be released in coming months.
