I’ve been using an iPad as my main “second screen” for work for a while now, and honestly, WhatsApp on it used to be kind of annoying. You’d open the iPhone app and everything was just… stretched. Big blank spaces, weird proportions, felt like an app that wasn’t really meant to be there.
That’s not the case anymore. There’s a real iPad app now, and it actually looks like something someone designed on purpose.
Install WhatsApp on your iPad
Go to the App Store, search WhatsApp Messenger, tap Get, do the Face ID, and you’re done. Takes like 30 seconds.
Your iPad needs iPadOS 15.1 or later. Got something older than that lying around? You won’t even see the app show up in the store; you’re just back to using WhatsApp Web in Safari like before.
Connect it to your number
It works the same way WhatsApp Web always has. Open the app on your iPad, a QR code shows up. Then pick up your phone, doesn’t matter if it’s Android or iPhone. Open WhatsApp there, hit the three dots, go to Linked Devices, tap Link a Device, and scan the code.
That’s it. Give it a second and all your chats just show up. And here’s the nice part, once it’s connected, your iPad doesn’t need your phone around anymore. Phone can be dead in a drawer somewhere and the iPad still works fine.
What makes it feel like an iPad app
A few things stood out to me
Your chat list sits on one side, the actual conversation on the other. Kind of like Mail looks on iPad, if you have used that.
You can run it in Split View or Slide Over, keep a call going in Picture in Picture while you’re doing something else. Actual multitasking, not just “the app is open.”
Group calls go up to 32 people now too, and it’s still fully encrypted, that part never changed.
Is WhatsApp Web even worth bothering with anymore
If your iPad can not run the real app, yeah, you are stuck with it, and it’s fine honestly, just not as smooth. If you can run the actual app though, I do that. It’s better in pretty much every way, better layout, actual multitasking, and you’re not keeping a Safari tab open forever.
