TikTok to launch separate app for America on September

Summary
  • A separate TikTok app will launch in the U.S. on September 5, 2025.
  • The current app will shut down in the U.S. by March 2026.
  • This move follows pressure to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations to non-Chinese ownership.
  • Trump claims many investors is ready to acquire TikTok’s U.S. arm.
  • The new app may not differ much from the original for users.

It might be the last scene of the decades-old drama in the United States called the TikTok controversy, as a massive turn of events is around the corner. Recently, former President Donald Trump said that very rich people are ready to buy the U.S. operations of TikTok.

Now, according to a new report, it is not quite a platform ban as it is proposed in the new report, but the rollout of a completely separate TikTok app for American users.

According to the report (required a subscription), a new version of TikTok will launch exclusively in the U.S. only on September 5, 2025. Current users have the right to continue using the current TikTok app until March 2026.

At that point, all American users will have to switch to the new app, separating American TikTok and the whole world.

TikTok has long been criticized by American lawmakers and officials due to national security concerns and the possible use of propaganda influence. The app’s alleged connections to the Chinese government led to calls suggesting an outright ban or forced sale of U.S. operations to a non-Chinese company.

While the Biden administration has also extended the scrutiny, the latest development is after former President Trump’s ongoing efforts to facilitate a sale. Even as Trump has extended the deadline for compliance multiple times, his recent statements suggest that a sale is finally imminent.

Although there are still no official details regarding the new U.S.-only TikTok app, it is expected that there will not be a lot of change from the user’s perspective.

The app should have the same content and features, but maybe it will be moderated or changed in content policy according to the American rules or politics.
