- Threads now supports DMs for private messaging.
- DMs are limited to mutual followers and users aged 18+
- Tap the envelope icon to send messages from the app.
- More features like message controls and group chats coming soon.
Just days before Threads celebrates its second anniversary, Meta has added one of the most demanded options, Direct Messaging (DMs).
Meta announced privately sending messages to each other using Threads on Tuesday; it is a good step in developing the app as a social media competitor, with the announcement made via the official blog of the company.
Private Conversations Come to Threads
According to Meta, Threads was created to share views that will cover vibrant, publicly held exchanges. You want to say more about something sometimes, just you and a person: one-on-one.
To a lot of people, one of the most noticeable missing features of Threads over its competitors, X (previously Twitter) and Bluesky, was the absence of DMs. Threads now has a full-service platform with this new feature, as it allows one to both connect publicly and privately.
DM Privacy and Safety Features
Privacy remains a core focus. Meta has tagged important limitations to guarantee a more secure messaging:
- Only users who follow each other on Threads or are mutual Instagram followers can send DMs.
- DMs are available only to users aged 18 and above.
- Messaging is protected by Meta’s privacy, safety, and account protection systems.
The purpose of installing these guardrails is to reduce spam and unwanted messages and concerns that have plagued other platforms.
More Messaging Features Coming Soon
Although the first version of Threads DMs is simple, Meta has revealed its plans to extend it in the future. In future, there can be updates like:
- Message controls to customize who can message you.
- Group messaging capabilities.
- Inbox filters to help organize messages and improve searchability.
The upcoming features will enhance the inbox of Threads to be smarter, cleaner, and easier to manage.
How to Send a DM on Threads
Here’s how you can send a DM on Threads.
- Open the Threads app on iOS or Android.
- Tap the envelope icon in the bottom toolbar.
- Tap the pencil icon in the top-right corner to start a new conversation.
- Enter the recipient’s username, type your message, and tap Send.
When you receive new messages, you will see a red dot under the envelope icon.
Threads has faced the problem of lacking a portion of important features, such as DM or even a trending topic. However, Threads has managed to remain Meta’s most successful Twitter competitor.
Now that direct messaging is made available and several other features are on the table, people can certainly lead a more complete social life via Threads, whether in the open or in intimacy.
