T20 World Cup 2024: Dates Set and New Format Unveiled

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially confirmed the dates for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. The much-anticipated cricket event is scheduled to take place from June 4 to 30 next year. In a first, the tournament will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States.

According to ESPNcricinfo, an ICC delegation recently visited the US to inspect potential venues for the tournament. The cities under consideration include Florida, Morrisville, Dallas, and New York. These cities are expected to host both tournament matches and warm-up games. This marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time that the US will host a global cricket event.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will feature 20 teams. Ireland, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea have already secured their spots through regional qualifiers organized by the ICC. The remaining slots will be filled by qualifiers from the Americas, Africa, and Asia regions in the coming months.

Twelve teams had already secured their places in the tournament prior to the regional qualifiers. These include the hosts, West Indies and USA, along with the top eight teams from the 2022 T20 World Cup – Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan and Bangladesh also qualified based on their positions in the T20I rankings.

In a departure from the previous two editions of the tournament, the 2024 T20 World Cup will feature a new format. The 20 participating teams will be divided into four groups of five each for the first round. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the Super 8s.

The Super 8 teams will further be split into two groups of four, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals. This new format promises to add an extra layer of excitement and competition to the tournament.
