A public holiday has been announced by the government of Sindh for May 1 (Wednesday) to honor Labour Day.
This public holiday will be observed by all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the jurisdiction of the Sindh government, except for essential services.
The federal and regional governments of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to follow suit and make May 1, 2024, a public holiday.
Note that Pakistan made Labour Day, May Day, a public holiday in 1972. Pakistan has been a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) since it became independent in 1947.
This decision by the Sindh government reflects their commitment to acknowledging the contributions and rights of workers and ensuring they have a day to celebrate and rest. Let’s all mark this special day and pay tribute to the hardworking labor force of Sindh.
