Revolution in Research: The Dawn of AI’s Impact on Science

ChatGPT AI tool was introduced in November 2022. Since then, everyone has been talking a lot about these new AI tools. People are both excited and a bit scared by them; they’re a big topic on the internet. This growing fascination parallels trends in online entertainment, such as the increasing focus on safe gambling at Bizzo Casino, where responsible gaming practices are emphasized alongside technological advancements.

AI’s Rocky Road: From Tay’s Troubles to Galactica1’s Shutdown 

Yet generative AI tools are far from new. ChatGPT is based on GPT-3, OpenAI’s third-generation large language models (LLMs), presented in 2020. Other less successful ventures into this space include Microsoft’s infamous Tay chatbot. It was programmed to ‘converse’ with and continue learning from users.

But, they terminated it 16 hours after releasing it on Twitter in 2016. Users trained it to spout offensive abuse. Two weeks before ChatGPT was released, Meta introduced Galactica1. It’s an AI tool designed to help scientists. Galactica1 was trained with 48 million scientific documents like research papers and textbooks. It was meant to answer science questions, write scientific texts, and even code.

But, it had to be shut down only three days after its launch. There was a lot of criticism because it often gave wrong, made-up, or strange answers. Some of its responses were even considered discriminatory.

Yet, where Galactica fell flat, ChatGPT took off. The creators of the latter used a large swath of internet data. They also added guardrails in model training. This was to control against (some of) the glitches mentioned above. They did this to ensure that the chatbot responds appropriately to offensive queries. The limited preview release of the new Microsoft Bing search engine happened a few weeks ago.

It is also powered by OpenAI’s LLM technology and is stated to be more advanced than ChatGPT. It also includes safeguards against harmful content. Since their release, many have discussed the potential and limitations of generative AI in countless opinion articles, news pieces, and social media posts.

We continue to take part in a large open experiment. The goal is to identify these chatbots’ weaknesses. We do this by testing and training them in real time as we grapple with the ethics of using such technologies.

ChatGPT and Beyond

For generative AI enthusiasts, the future is now! The chatbots can respond to science questions. They can also take school exams. They can also write all types of text. Indeed, ChatGPT has the potential to summarize scientific literature. But, it does not cite sources. It can also produce text.

Thus, it could be used to write, improve, and prove parts of, or whole, scientific manuscripts. In the future, use AI tools in many areas. They could help analyze books and articles, design experiments, and make presentations and figures. These tools also assist in writing, reviewing, and publishing scientific papers.

AI could make things fairer by helping people overcome language issues. It could also improve how well they write and how easy their writing is to read. AI could also be used in research and medical training. It could diagnose diseases, develop new drugs, and choose treatments.

AI’s Double-Edged Sword: The Promise and Perils of ChatGPT and Bing in Science and Ethics

Critics have noticed that large AI models like ChatGPT sometimes make mistakes. These AI programs can give out wrong information as if it’s true, even though they were trained not to do that. There have been cases where ChatGPT and Bing’s AI insisted that false things were true.

They can also create detailed, well-written responses that are entirely made up. A relevant example is the production of plausible-sounding abstracts of non-existent scientific papers3. ChatGPT has no concept of science integrity and no qualms about fabricating research.

Users have tested the abilities of these tools. They have found unpredictable, troubling responses. In the case of Bing4, users have found declarations of love. They have also found forays into its Jungian version of a ‘shadow self.’ There are reports that people have found ways to make AI chatbots like ChatGPT answer questions they shouldn’t.

There are rules to prevent this. This could lead to more wrong or offensive information being shared. Also, using these AI tools may make the gap bigger between places with lots of research resources. Those that don’t have as much.

Balancing Innovation and Integrity

For scientists and publishers, the broader aim is to engage positively and constructively with new AI-driven technologies while defining their limits and realizing protections against misuse. Tools are already being developed to detect text generated by generative AI.

GPTZero is one such example. Other approaches include ongoing efforts to watermark AI-generated text. Neither approach would be infallible. Efforts to detect such text have already shown this. Still, they may integrate into publishing like other tools to ensure research integrity.

As AI gets better and more enjoyable, we must consider how much we should use it in science. Should researchers depend on AI that can read and repeat information? How much work done by people should we replace with machines? We need to consider this when organizing and understanding information. It helps us come up with new ideas.

Are we okay with using AI, which saves time but might be less creative and precise than humans? Finding the right balance is very important. This means using new technology and keeping our scientific work clear and true.

Final Thoughts

People have made much use of ChatGPT’s ability to do almost anything. This includes writing songs and poems—or, as musician Nick Cave put it, “a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human.” Both science and art share a common trait – they are creative endeavors that aim to explore and understand the mysteries of existence.

It is an effort to make sense of the world around us. One uses reason; the other uses feeling. Both need the experiences, flair, and insight of a human being. One of the appealing features of ChatGPT is its ability to communicate with us using natural language. As an AI-powered chatbot, it understands our queries and provides relevant responses.

It lacks morality, consciousness, and the ability to inspire and create original thought. Yet, it sounds as if it has all the above. AI chatbots like ChatGPT give detailed, long answers. This makes it seem like you’re talking to someone aware and knowledgeable. But it’s a complex program that mimics human conversation by analyzing lots of text data. It may produce fluent responses but will not interpret experimental results. It also will not access the literature in depth. It will never write real poetry.
