Reddit is currently under the microscope in Russia due to its failure to remove content deemed as “banned” by the Moscow court. The court alleges that such content undermines the credibility of the Russian military, according to reports from the Interfax news agency.
However, Reddit is not alone in facing this scrutiny. Other major platforms including Wikimedia, Twitch, and Google have also been criticized by Russian authorities for their reluctance or failure to take down content that is considered illegal under Russian law.
The contentious issue revolves around Reddit hosting what the Russian authorities term “knowingly false information” about the Soviet Union’s role in World War Two. Additionally, the platform is accused of spreading content that discredits the Russian armed forces and propagates other forms of “extremist information.”
If found guilty, Reddit could be slapped with a hefty fine of up to 4 million roubles ($43,895). As of now, Reddit has not issued any immediate comments regarding these allegations.
This development comes at a time when Russia is tightening its grip on media coverage and bloggers. The country has implemented stricter penalties for those found guilty of disseminating false information or “discrediting” the actions of its armed forces, particularly in relation to the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.
It’s worth noting that Reddit has recently faced criticism from its users as well, although for different reasons. However, the current situation in Russia adds another layer of complexity to the challenges the platform is facing globally.
