Punjab’s education boards are changing how practical exams get marked. From now on, the written part of practical papers, the section students fill out during physics, chemistry, biology and computer science practicals, will be checked centrally by the board instead of at the exam centre itself.
Why the change? Officials point to a pattern that had been bothering them for a while. Students were showing up with strong practical marks even when their theory papers were weak, sometimes way weaker than the practical score would suggest. That gap raised questions.
A BISE Lahore official explained how it’ll actually work. Boards will collect the written answer sheets from centres after the exam and hand them to trained examiners for marking, the same way theory papers are handled. Centre examiners still stay involved, but their job narrows down to watching lab work, checking practical skills, and conducting the viva.
Complaints were part of the reason too. Under the old setup, both students and teachers had flagged inconsistency in how marks were being given out, and there wasn’t much room to review it after the fact. Now, if someone challenges their marks, the board actually has the paper on file and can go back and check.
One board official put it simply: the goal is for marks to reflect what a student actually did, not vary depending on which centre they happened to sit in.
Whether this restores full confidence remains to be seen, but some in the education sector think it’s a step in the right direction, especially for science subjects where practical scores tend to swing final results by a noticeable margin.
Students want more clarity though. Several have asked boards to release sample papers or clear guidelines before the next exam cycle so they’re not caught off guard by a new format they’ve never seen before.
