The decision by the caretaker government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to prolong the winter break for schools in the province has been met with opposition from the Private Education Network (PEN) in KP.
In an official statement, PEN is urging the relevant authorities to reconsider their choice to extend the winter vacation. Muhammad Saleem Khan, the president of the network, expressed concerns that such decisions could jeopardize students’ academic futures.
Khan cautioned that after factoring in gazetted vacations, matriculation students are left with only 126 instructional days, and intermediate students with 91 days to complete their syllabi.
The PEN president questioned the logic behind extending winter vacations when private school teachers are not involved in the election process. He proposed starting schools at 9 am as a practical solution for coping with harsh winter weather rather than prolonging vacations.
By opposing the extension, private institutes are prioritizing concerns over the shortened study period available for exam preparation over weather conditions.
They contend that the future of students cannot be compromised by well-intentioned but impractical decisions. Authorities are being urged to reconsider, keeping the impact on students’ academics as the foremost consideration.
