Nine individuals including four military personnel, lost their lives in a plane crash in the coastal city of Port Sudan on Sunday. The sole survivor of the crash was a child. The Sudanese army confirmed that the civilian Antonov plane crashed at Port Sudan Airport due to a technical failure.
Port Sudan Airport, currently the only operational airport in the country, is a critical transit point for foreign aid, which is desperately needed amidst the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group. The fighting has been concentrated in the capital, Khartoum, and various states in western Sudan.
The city of Port Sudan, located in the Red Sea state along the eastern coast of the country, has remained under the control of the Sudanese army since the outbreak of the war. The United Nations reports that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 civilians and the displacement of nearly 3 million people.
The situation is dire, with up to 25 million people in Sudan requiring humanitarian aid and protection. The UN has urged the warring factions to resolve their dispute without further loss of life.
The conflict has left millions confined to their homes, struggling to access basic necessities such as food and water. The suburbs of Khartoum are particularly hard-hit, with residents pleading for food donations to survive. Many report being able to eat only once a day, and power outages in some areas have exacerbated the crisis.
Even before the war, about one-third of the population was already facing hunger, according to the United Nations World Food Programme. The recent plane crash adds another layer of tragedy to an already desperate situation.
