After years of waiting, 4K resolution support has finally arrived for Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. This much-anticipated graphical upgrade comes with the latest Minecraft preview update (Version 1.20.60.23).
While the update also introduces some other experimental features like the Armadillo mob and new commands, the highlight is undoubtedly the 4K support mentioned briefly in the patch notes: “Added 4k resolution support for Xbox Series consoles.”
Previously Stuck at 1080p
Before this update, Minecraft ran at 1080p resolution on the Xbox Series X|S – the same as the last-gen Xbox One consoles. The addition of 4K support finally unlocks sharper visuals and more immersive textures aligned with what the Series X|S can deliver.
Initially Promised in 2017
4K support was first teased way back at E3 2017 along with the announcement of the Super Duper Graphics Pack. That was supposed to bring enhanced lighting, shadows, textures, and more for a $10 upgrade. However, it faced several technical hurdles and eventually got canceled in 2019.
In Preview For Now
The 4K update is currently only available to Xbox users signed up for the Minecraft Preview program. This allows players to test new features before they hit the main game.
Once stability and performance meet standards after enough testing, 4K support could officially launch with Minecraft’s 1.21 update.
With over 300 million copies sold, Minecraft continues to have a special place in the gaming world. This visual enhancement will surely delight many existing players and draw in new ones too.
