Govt College University Staff Demands Special Allowance for Elections

On Tuesday, the Academic Staff Association (ASA) Executive Council convened an emergency meeting at Government College University (GCU) to discuss concerns about the upcoming elections and the duties of GCU instructors.

The delegates expressed great worry over providing GCU faculty names for election responsibilities and evaluated the current situation.

The GCU-ASA Executive Body asked that the Higher Education Department (HED) and the Punjab government either delete the letter or grant a 15% special allowance for teachers and employees immediately. If this demand is not met, university teachers will refuse to vote in elections.

Members of the executive body referenced a letter issued by the HED on April 4 (Ref No: SO Univ.1-4/2022) that designated university teachers and non-teaching personnel as non-government employees and denied them the 15% special stipend.

Members of the executive body declared firmly that if the university professors and staff were not government employees, using their names in election commission assignments designed primarily for government civil officials was not appropriate.

Delegates from university instructors encouraged the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) Punjab to tackle the situation quickly and to play its role in protecting university teachers’ fundamental rights.
