Google confirms plans to merge Android and ChromeOS into a single platform

Summary
  • Google confirms plans to combine Android and ChromeOS into one platform.
  • No timeline shared yet for the merger.
  • Rumors of such integration have been circulating for years.

Google has officially confirmed that it plans to merge Android and ChromeOS into a single operating system. Sameer Samat, president of Android Ecosystem at Google, revealed the news in an interview with the TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff.

Samat said, We are going to be merging ChromeOS and Android to create a single platform. However, he did not specify when the change is going to happen and what the unified platform will be.

Rumors of merging the two huge Google platforms have been in existence over the years. Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world and ChromeOS the one powering Chromebook laptops, Chromebox mini PCs and Chromebit devices. ChromeOS is light, fast and depends on Chrome browser and cloud storage.

During that same interview, Samat also spoke about Android 16, highlighting improvements in customization and deeper integration of the Gemini AI. The chance of unifying Android and ChromeOS is by far the most exciting news, though, as Google has already been moving Android into a larger-screen-friendly direction with features like Desktop Mode, which can transform Pixel phones into a mini PC-like experience.

Although details of the technical sides of the merger have not been revealed by Google, Samat claimed that he was interested in how people currently use laptops and what they want a laptop to do nowadays.

The possible combined operating system will transform the way Android is used on phones, tablets, and PCs and may even provide a smooth cross-device experience.
