Google Maps’ useful Driving Mode feature provides a safer navigation experience may be removed by February 2024 based on recent findings. Code in the latest Google app suggests the view will be going away, instead pushing users towards Google Assistant for hands-free use while driving.
The Android-exclusive Driving Mode aims to cut down on distractions by simplifying the interface and providing voice commands.
Users have expressed concerns over the potential loss of functionality and safety if it is replaced entirely by Assistant. The system does not always understand complex requests which may force drivers to still look at their phone screens.
While the goal seems to promote audio-only interactions for minimal distraction, the change has been met with some backlash. Many users simply prefer direct touch controls or do not like using voice assistants.
There is also no guarantee that the Assistant will be able to handle every common in-car task such as messaging or media playback.
The fate of the useful Driving Mode remains uncertain. Google has not officially confirmed plans to remove it.
Some hold out hope that an improved version could still be in development to give users more options over Assistant alone. For now, Google Maps users continue benefiting from the feature as speculation on its future lingers.
