Google is preparing to launch a paid subscription for Bard, its AI-powered chatbot that was released last month as a rival to ChatGPT. The new premium tier, called Bard Advanced, will likely be bundled as part of Google’s subscription service Google One.
Code discovered within the Bard website suggests that users will be able to “Try Bard Advanced for 3 months, on us” before needing to pay.
It is unclear if Bard Advanced will be available to all Google One subscribers or only those on more expensive plans. The findings indicate that after an initial free trial period, a monthly or yearly fee will be charged.
Offering a paid tier for Bard Advanced aligns with Google’s need to monetize its large language models. Running complex AI systems like Bard at scale requires massive computing resources, the costs of which likely factored into the decision to develop a subscription model.
Bard Advanced was first teased when the chatbot launched in December. Google stated it would be opening more advanced capabilities to testers soon, so the public launch may not be far off. Finding pricing details and promotions already present in the Bard website code suggests readiness for a wider rollout is nearing completion.
The premium model would grant access to Bard’s most advanced reasoning skills and math capabilities. For Google, it represents a way to offset the expenses required to compete with the likes of ChatGPT in the fast-growing AI assistant space.
