Google Chrome 139 is set to launch at the end of this month and will also mark the end of macOS 11 Big Sur. As reported by 9to5Mac, the Chrome Platform Status page has been updated to state that the new Chrome 138 is the last Chrome release to officially support macOS Big Sur.
Big Sur, first announced in November 2020, has been enjoying a nice run, but it is about to be end soon-at least on Chrome. After Chrome 138, the browser will stop being updated in macOS 11. It will still work, but when user try to use it, it will show a warning message that their system is no longer supported.
Google has explained that keeping Chrome updated on supported operating system is important to ensure security. Without regular updates, users may risk exposure to vulnerabilities, hacking, and related scams, that latest Chrome version are ready to block.
To get continuous Chrome updates, you should update your Mac to a newer version of macOS 12 Monterey or another newer version. However, some older Macs, and especially those launched before 2015, are ineligible to get beyond Big Sur.
The only thing you can do with those machines is to use a browser which has not support older systems or maybe, by upgrading to a newer mac.
While Chrome will technically continue working on macOS Big Sur, it will not be safe or future-proof. If you have been delaying a system update, now might be the right time to make the move.
