Facebook Messenger to Discontinue SMS Support Soon

Facebook announced in 2016 that it would no longer support the exchange of SMS messages through its Messenger platform. The social media giant made this announcement on its Help Center page, leaving users and industry experts puzzled as the reasons behind this decision were not disclosed.

The change, which is set to take effect on September 28, will impact users who have been using Messenger as their primary SMS application. Following the update, these users will lose the ability to send or receive text messages via the app.

Facebook has recommended Android users consider transitioning to other messaging platforms such as Google Messages or their device’s default messaging application.

While the exact reasons for this decision remain unclear, some speculate that the dwindling use of SMS could be a contributing factor. With the rise of various chatting apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, and many others, the popularity of traditional SMS has significantly declined.
