Argentina is set to commemorate its Independence Day on Sunday, July 9, with a nationwide celebration filled with traditional food, music, dance, and theater. The capital city, Buenos Aires, will be brimming with a plethora of activities that reflect the rich past and vibrant present of Argentine culture.

In the La Boca neighborhood, the community theater group Catalinas Sur will be marking its 40th anniversary with a festival at Escuella Della Penna. Established in 1983 following the return of democracy, this group has been a platform for collective memory, allowing locals to stage original plays about history and culture.

The celebration will include a parade featuring live music and a puppet show, leading attendees to Plaza Malvinas Argentinas. Here, a special performance of their classic play “Venimos de muy lejos” will take place, followed by a barbecue serving fresh grilled meats, including traditional chorizo dishes.

Food is an integral part of the Independence Day celebrations. Restaurants across the city will offer traditional dishes such as Locro, a traditional Andean stew, empanadas, and lentejas stew. Despite red meat being synonymous with Argentine identity, vegan options are also available. For instance, HierBabuena restaurant will serve a vegan version of Locro, providing a perfect end to the day when paired with a glass of wine or an artisanal brew.

The southern part of Buenos Aires will host the Feria de Mataderos, a historic fair celebrating traditional folklore dance and music. This event, located about an hour from downtown, will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring a market selling local goods and serving traditional dishes alongside live performances.

Another highlight of the day will be the circuit of Buenos Aires city artisanal markets. These markets will offer cooking classes and a wide array of food from various Latin American cultures. The main attraction on Sunday will be live music and a festive celebration of independence at these markets, culminating in a closing performance at 4 p.m. at the Patio Rodrigo Bueno market in Puerto Madero.

Argentine Independence Day offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the country’s rich cultural heritage. Whether it’s through enjoying traditional food, watching a play, or participating in a dance, there’s something for everyone in Buenos Aires on July 9.
