In the celestial calendar of 2023, Pakistan is set to witness four lunar eclipses, also known as Chand Grahan. These natural phenomena occur when the Earth positions itself between the Sun and a Full Moon, casting its shadow on the moon’s surface.

The first of these lunar eclipses was a penumbral eclipse, which took place on the 5th and 6th of May 2023. This type of eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the faint outer part of the Earth’s shadow, resulting in a subtle dimming of the moon’s light. The May eclipse was visible across a wide geographical area, including South/East Europe, much of Asia, Australia, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and even Antarctica. Importantly, this celestial event was clearly visible from Pakistan.
Looking ahead, the second lunar eclipse is scheduled for the 28th and 29th of October 2023. Unlike the first, this will be a partial eclipse, where only a portion of the moon enters the Earth’s umbra, the darkest part of its shadow. This results in the moon appearing darkened, but not completely obscured. The October eclipse will be visible from Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, North/East South America, the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic, and Antarctica. Once again, stargazers in Pakistan will have the opportunity to witness this fascinating celestial event.

Details about the remaining two lunar eclipses of 2023 are yet to be released by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). However, it is confirmed that all four eclipses will be either partial or penumbral in nature.
