Twitter has recently launched a new feature that allows content creators to earn money from the advertising revenue generated by ads displayed in response to their tweets. This innovative approach is designed to reward creators for their contributions to the platform.
To be eligible for this revenue-sharing program, individuals must meet certain criteria. They must be subscribed to Twitter Blue or be affiliated with verified organizations. Additionally, they must have achieved at least 5 million tweet impressions within the past three months and pass a human review based on Creator Monetization Standards. Other requirements include maintaining a follower count of 10,000 or more and posting a minimum of 25 tweets within a 30-day period.
Twitter’s CEO, Elon Musk, revealed that the initial round of payments will total $5 million, commencing from February onwards. All payments will be processed through Stripe, a leading online payment processing platform.
This new feature has already proven lucrative for some content creators. For instance, writer Brian Krassenstein disclosed that he received a total of $24,305 from Twitter. He boasts a following of 750,000 users. Some of the most popular Twitter accounts, often referred to as the ‘internet hall of Fame,’ have earned an impressive $107,274, marking one of the highest payouts since the launch of the program.
However, the exact method used by Twitter to calculate and distribute the shared revenue among eligible accounts remains undisclosed. The company has chosen to place ads in responses to tweets, given the difficulty of determining which creators should be compensated for ads seen in the main feed. This strategy is similar to the challenges faced by short video platforms like TikTok regarding revenue sharing.
This arrangement naturally encourages creators to stimulate discussions on their tweets, ideally fostering healthy conversations. However, it has been observed on platforms like Facebook that intense emotional reactions often drive the highest levels of engagement.
