At this point, it’s useless to ask if you use ChatGPT since we know the vast majority of you do. Nobody is to blame because the AI bot is nearly unbeatable with the best ChatGPT prompts. But did you know that every interaction you have with ChatGPT captures your history and is used for training its LLM model?
If you didn’t, now is the moment to learn how to turn it off. So, if you’re worried about ChatGPT’s history of your prompts, find out how to disable chat history and LLM training according to the questions you ask.
How to Disable Chat History in ChatGPT
Before we continue, I would like to point out that the ability to delete your chat history and not use your information for model training is not limited to ChatGPT Plus members. Every ChatGPT user can disable the chat history. here’s how:
- Begin by connecting to ChatGPT’s website by clicking the OpenAI account link here if you haven’t already. Enter your login information to be redirected to the chat panel.
- To display a pop-up menu, click on the account profile icon on the chat screen.
- Once there, select “Settings” to get access to all ChatGPT settings.
- To access the history option, under the settings pop-up, select “Show” next to Data Controls.
- Finally, flip the “Chat History & Training” toggle to the off position, and you’re done.
It’s as simple as that! Your ChatGPT history is no longer available, and new chats will no longer be used for training OpenAI’s LLM model. Your previous chats will be turned out, with the option to instantly activate ChatGPT history if you want.
Note: Even if the ChatGPT history option is off, we still recommend exercising caution when exchanging private data with the AI chatbot. While OpenAI claims that no recordings are made after this setting, one cannot ever be too careful. Furthermore, the company is about to launch a ChatGPT Business membership that will allegedly provide even more security.
It should be noted that new chats will still be kept for 30 days, but just for abuse tracking. These will be continuously deleted once their time expires.
How to Clear Old ChatGPT Chats
If you are sharing a ChatGPT Plus account with someone else or simply dislike clutter, you can easily delete old ChatGPT chats. Here’s how you can go about it:
- Log in to the ChatGPT account and then click on the profile icon to bring up a pop-up menu.
- To start deleting your chats, click “Clear Conversations” here.
- It will now request that you confirm your activity. Simply click “Confirm clear conversations” to complete your selection.
- As you can see below, your previous ChatGPT history has now been completely deleted.
Note that you will no longer be able to access your previous chats. However, if you follow our instructions above, you can start a new chat that will not be used for training.
How to Export ChatGPT Data
When you export the ChatGPT data, it is not removed from OpenAI’s servers. However, for those who only want it for personal data, we have provided instructions. You must first enter ChatGPT’s settings and then proceed as follows:
