Threads, Instagram’s rival to X (formerly Twitter), is rolling out a new feature that allows users to add up to 10,000-character text to their posts. The decision is to make long-form content easier to share on the platform without overwhelming readers with a giant wall of text.
Users can now create a text attachment that expands when tapped, instead of hitting the previous 500-character limit. This allows writers, journalists, or content creators to share longer excerpts while still linking back to their original articles, blogs, or websites.
Meta explained that the feature was designed to replace the clunky practice of posting text screenshots, which was a common workaround. It will provide people with additional space to communicate and allow them to push and move people to their work wherever it lives, the company said in a statement.
This new update also gives Threads a competitive edge over X, which has limited free accounts to 280 characters, and only paid subscribers can post longer posts. Another new microblogging platform, Bluesky, has a limit of 300 characters. By offering 10,000 characters for free, Threads can attract users who want to have more flexibility without needing a premium plan..
How to use Text Attachment feature
Using the new tool is simple
- Tap the new “text” icon when creating a post.
- Paste or type your content into the attachment box.
- If you want to add a source link, include it in the main body of the post, not in an attachment.

After posting, the attachment will appear well below your main text, allowing the reader the option to expand and read more.
