It is said to be a significant physical as well as a spiritual trip in Islamic history. Lailatul Miraj / Shab e Meraj was a magnificent ascension of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to seven heavens on the back of an animal Buraq. The great ascension of Shab e Miraj is divided into two parts, Isra and Mi’raj.

The event of Mi’raj is referenced in Surah Al Isra in the Qur’an, although the specifics of the event are clearer in Ahadith. The final Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم), went on the back of a winged mule-like beast known as Buraq.

As Surah Al-Isra mentioned in the incident of Mi’raj, the reports, teachings, acts, and quotes of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) were later presented in detail. Hazrat Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) traveled to the most distant mosque, Al-Aqsa Mosque, where he led all previous prophets of Islam in prayer.

Jibreel, God’s angel, descended down to Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) while he was sleeping and washed his heart with pure waters before he began his journey. The journey to the heavens on the back of Buraq is known as Mi’raj, which means Ascension. According to records, the Shab e Meraj event occurred in the year 612.

The Muslim world celebrates Lailat al-Mi’raj, also known as Shab-e-Mi’raj or Isra Wal Miraj, particularly in Pakistan, India, Turkey, Bangladesh, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. Throughout the night, many Muslims do optional prayers, while others gather to illuminate cities and areas with candles and electric lights.
