North Korea Warns of ‘Shocking’ Repercussions Following Alleged US Spy Plane Intrusion

Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has issued a stern warning to the United States following allegations of a US spy plane flying over nearby waters. She claimed that North Korean warplanes successfully repelled the US aircraft on Monday and cautioned of “shocking” consequences if the US continues its reconnaissance activities in the region.

Despite North Korea’s history of making similar threats over purported US surveillance operations, this recent statement comes amidst escalating tensions following North Korea’s series of missile tests earlier this year. Kim Yo-jong, who holds a significant role in her brother’s foreign policy team, alleged that the US spy plane entered North Korea’s eastern exclusive economic zone eight times on Monday. She further stated that North Korean warplanes were scrambled to drive it away.

The North Korean defense ministry also accused the US of multiple intrusions into its “inviolable airspace” with a strategic reconnaissance plane on Monday. It warned that any approaching aircraft might be shot down in response.

However, the US and South Korea have dismissed these accusations. Sabrina Singh, deputy Pentagon press secretary, referred to the North’s claims as mere “accusations”. She reiterated the US’s commitment to operating safely and responsibly anywhere international law permits, in coordination with its allies and partners.

Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the US state department, urged North Korea to abstain from “escalatory actions” and engage in serious diplomacy instead. Similarly, South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff denied any intrusion of a US spy plane into North Korean territory. Spokesperson Lee Sung-joon clarified that the US was conducting standard reconnaissance activities in coordination with South Korea’s military.

Despite these dismissals, Kim Yo-jong issued another statement on Tuesday, asserting that intensifying US reconnaissance activities were infringing on North Korea’s sovereignty. She warned that US forces would “experience a very critical flight” if they persist in their activities. This ongoing situation underscores the delicate balance of power and the potential for escalation in the region.
