NEPRA Approves Rs3.07 per Unit Hike in Electricity Tariff

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase of Rs3.07 per unit in the power tariff on account of fuel price adjustments for October 2023.

According to the details provided in the notification, around 9.25 billion units were generated from thermal sources while 3.11 billion units were produced from hydropower in October.

The fuel price adjustment will put an additional burden of Rs 24.5 billion on the consumers served by distribution companies across Pakistan.

Earlier, NEPRA had also approved a Rs1.52 per unit increase in electricity prices for K-Electric consumers which will remain applicable from November 2023 to December 2024.

The notification stated that the rise in fuel prices and currency devaluation led to an increase in overall energy generation costs for October.

Consumer rights activists have termed the frequent hikes unjustified and demanded the government take steps to provide relief to the public already grappling with high inflation.

The recent spate of hikes in electricity tariffs has sparked public outrage as people question the government’s policies that have led to almost unbearable living costs
