Private schools in Pakistan have been closed today due to the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan and the subsequent protests. The All Pakistan Private Schools Federation (APPSF) took the decision due to the “emergency situation” across the country
Federation president Kashif Mirza said in a video message that a decision on when regular classes will start will be taken after discussions on Wednesday. Mirza also appealed to all students, teachers, staff and parents to be careful in the current situation of the country.
However, matriculation exams will be held as per schedule, according to Board of Secondary Education Karachi Controller of Examinations Habibullah Sahag. The biology exam will be held today at 9 am, followed by the English exam for the general group of matriculation at 2:30 pm.
After the arrest of Imran Khan, protests were held in many cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar and Mardan.
The PTI called on its supporters to protest and “block all roads, close all shops”. Protesters clashed with police near a nursery in Karachi, pelted stones, set police vehicles on fire, broke street lights, and damaged a bus. According to reports, the police fired tear gas shells at the protesters. Protesters also damaged government property in other cities including Rawalpindi and Lahore.
