Elon Musk has announced his intention to replace the platform’s iconic blue bird logo with an ‘X’. This announcement comes after his acquisition of the social media giant for $44 billion in 2022.
Musk made this revelation through a series of tweets on Sunday, indicating that the logo change could be implemented globally as early as Monday. He shared an image of a flickering ‘X’ and confirmed during a Twitter Spaces audio chat that the logo would indeed be changed. Musk expressed his belief that this change “should have been done a long time ago”.
Since acquiring Twitter in October 2022, Musk has steered the company through a period of turbulence. The company was rebranded as X Corp under his leadership, aligning with his ambition to create a “super app” akin to China’s WeChat. Musk stated in October that purchasing Twitter was a step towards creating X, the Everything app.
However, Musk’s tenure at Twitter has not been without controversy. Since the rebranding to X Corp, the platform has faced numerous technical issues and staff layoffs, leading to a decrease in user and advertiser satisfaction. Additionally, Musk introduced charges for previously free services, altered content moderation policies, and allowed the return of previously banned right-wing accounts. As a result, the platform lost around half of its advertising revenue under his leadership.
Despite these challenges, Musk remains committed to his vision for the platform. His latest move to replace the blue bird logo with an ‘X’ marks another significant change in Twitter’s identity under his leadership.
