ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial, has underscored the importance of transparency in the delimitation of electoral constituencies. The Chief Justice made these remarks while presiding over a two-member bench hearing petitions related to the delimitations of provincial constituencies PS 7, 8, and 9 in Shikarpur.
These constituencies had previously been the subject of legal disputes in the apex court in 2018. The Chief Justice emphasized that the delimitation process is a matter of significant public interest and has been a topic of discussion in the highest court on numerous occasions.
“The Election Commission should ensure that delimitations are conducted transparently,” stated the Chief Justice. He further stressed that even minor alterations by the ‘tapedar’ (land record officer) could significantly influence the number of votes a candidate receives.
In addition to this, CJP Bandial sought information about the schedule for the upcoming general elections. However, Director General (Law) Muhammad Arshad appeared uncertain about the timeline.
The Chief Justice commented, “As of now, there is no fixed date for the elections. The election commission needs to address all concerns before the polling takes place.” He also pointed out that the issue of delimitation is particularly sensitive in Sindh, where complaints frequently arise regarding the accuracy of the process.
Following the hearing, the Supreme Court referred the matter back to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for further deliberation. This move underscores the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process in the country.
