Are Power Banks Allowed on UAE Airlines? New Rules Explained

Understanding the rules for carrying power banks is crucial for travellers flying with UAE-based airlines, especially as several international airlines have recently banned their use onboard.

New Power Bank Bans on International Airlines

Starting from April 1, 2025, Singapore Airlines will forbid power banks. They must have been in the luggage but had not checked their baggage.

Other airlines enforcing similar bans include:

  • Thai Airways & AirAsia (Mar 15, 2025) – may carry power banks, but are not allowed to use or recharge them.
  • EVA Air & China Airlines (Mar 1 2025) – prohibit power bank usage
  • Air Busan – power banks must remain in possession, and not be placed in overhead compartments.

Power Bank Rules on UAE Airlines

UAE’s GCAA permits power banks on Emirates, Etihad, Flydubai, and Air Arabia, provided they follow stringent restrictions:

  • Power banks must be carried in the luggage.
  • Individual protection is needed to avoid short-circuiting.
  • Passengers can only carry a maximum of 15 power banks for personal gadgets (PED).
  • Power banks should not be used or charged during journeys.

Each UAE airline follows these guidelines:

  • Emirates – allows power banks only in hand luggage as per its “Dangerous Goods Policy”.
  • Etihad Airways – are to be carried in hand luggage instead of checked in baggage.
  • Flydubai and Air Arabia – follow GCAA’s battery-powered device regulations.

Can You Use Power Banks During a Flight?

UAE airlines allow the carrying of power banks, but their use for charging devices may still depend on the respective airline’s regulations.

  • Some airlines allow charging mobile devices but do not permit recharging power banks.
  • Always verify the latest regulations with the airline before flying.

Tips for Travelers

  • Power banks should always be kept in hand luggage.
  • Confirm the airline’s policy prior to travelling since rules might change.
  • Protect power banks against short-circuiting.
  • Do not recharge power banks during the flight unless stated otherwise.

Awareness of airline regulations guarantees an easy and trouble-free trip, whether travelling within UAE borders or abroad.
