For the first time since the iPhone 11 Pro, Apple has dramatically changed the design of its flagship iPhone. The iPhone 17 Pro features an all-new aluminum unibody chassis with a bold new camera bar Apple calls a “plateau that creates additional space for internal components.”
The design received mixed reactions as some people compared it to the iPhone 11 Pro’s infamous “cooktop” camera module. Some fans are excited, especially about the Cosmic Orange, Blue, and Silver finishes, while others consider it a risky departure from the traditional Apple design language.
Since the iPhone X, all models have had a glass back to support MagSafe and wireless charging. With the iPhone 17 Pro, however, Apple switched to a full aluminum chassis around the back of the phone, leaving only a central glass window for wireless charging.
Perhaps even more surprising is Apple’s decision to drop the classic Black and Gold options for the more unconventional colors. While this bold direction aligns with Apple’s drive to differentiate, the question remains whether consumers will embrace the new look.
While the new plateau-style design may feel controversial, some fashion insiders have already suggested that it would not last for long. Reports suggest that Apple might launch its first foldable iPhone by 2026 and introduce a redesign for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027.
For now, the iPhone 17 Pro does bring practical improvements from its aluminum build, as it dissipates heat better and is more durable. But long-time Apple fans still mourn the loss of the more subdued, professional look and finishes. For those who want to play it safe, the Silver variant is already being touted as the best color option.
Preorders for the iPhone 17 Pro will open on September 12, 2025, and the phone will become available a week later. Whether this bold new look wins hearts or sparks more controversy remains to be seen.
