Elon Musk has announced that the social media platform will now exclusively operate in ‘dark mode’. This decision effectively eliminates users’ ability to select their preferred visual theme.
Musk made this surprising announcement via a Thursday morning post on ‘X’. Earlier in the week, he had sought the opinion of his followers regarding a potential shift of the platform’s default color to black. The poll attracted over 1.8 million responses, with a substantial 78.4% supporting the transition to a black theme.
The CEO responded to the overwhelming support with a tweet stating, “This platform will soon only have ‘dark mode’. It is better in every way.”
‘Dark mode’, also known as ‘night mode’ on some devices, is a screen setting that reduces the white light emitted by a device. It displays gray or white text against a black background, making the screen easier on the eyes in low-light conditions or during nighttime use.
Historically, Twitter ‘X’, has been recognized for its default white theme. However, in 2016, it introduced a dark mode option, offering two variations: ‘dim’ and ‘lights out’. The ‘dim’ mode presents the platform in dark blue hues, while the ‘lights out’ showcases it in black tones.
Musk’s decision to change the platform’s default display without providing alternative options highlights his ongoing efforts to reshape Twitter, now ‘X’, according to his vision. He has indicated that the social media platform will serve as a key component of his “everything app”, an all-in-one service set to include social media, financial transactions, banking, messaging, and more, similar to the Chinese app WeChat.
