How to Recover an ASD File

A file with the file extension “.ASD” is a backup file for a Microsoft Word 2002 or 2003 document that is automatically saved. As you work on a project, Microsoft Office Word backs it up regularly. Due to system faults or software difficulties, the original document may become damaged or lost on occasion. In many cases, the ASD file may be recoverable using the Word program that was used to produce the document.

How to Recover an ASD File

  • Find the ASD file on your PC.
  • Select “Open With…” when you right-click on the ASD file.
  • Select “Microsoft Office Word” from the menu. The document is shown in the Word application. If the document does not open in Word, Microsoft suggests changing the file extension from “.ASD” to “.DOC” and then attempting to open it in Word.
