Punjab School Education Department is considering extending winter vacations for schools by one additional week in light of the ongoing severe cold wave gripping the province.
The current winter break for schools commenced on December 18th and was scheduled to end in the first week of January 2024.
Many parents have voiced worries about having to send their children back to school in harsh, freezing conditions at the start of January. They are requesting an extension of the winter holidays until January 7th.
Responding to parental input, the Education Department has said any decision to prolong vacations would be taken after deliberating with the provincial government. Officials are weighing the concerns of parents against the learning loss that would occur with prolonged closures.
If the cold wave persists in early January, the authorities may have no choice but to push back the reopening of schools by another week. Private schools in Punjab have already extended their winter break.
The Education Department is expected to announce its final decision on adjusting the winter holidays in the coming days, keeping in mind the well-being of students.
