WhatsApp is preparing to give Android users more control over their group chats with a new feature that lets them mute “@everyone” mentions. The feature, spotted in the latest beta update, will help reduce unwanted notifications in favor of more personalized options to manage conversations.
According to WABetaInfo, the tool was found in the WhatsApp Beta 2.25.27.1 for Android version 2.25.27.1. A leaked screenshot reveals a new Mute everyone option that has appeared under the notifications settings. By default, this toggle is switched off, so users will have to turn it on manually if they want to mute notifications from these mass mentions.
The “@everyone” mention was introduced to allow admins and members to inform everyone in a group chat at once. While useful in urgent situations, it has often been criticized for misuse, spamming, and unnecessary disruptions.
Under this new option, WhatsApp is offering a way to strike a balance, those who do not want to be flooded with notifications can mute them, but those who want to stay fully updated can leave the notifications enabled.
The feature is currently under development and has not yet been released to beta users on the Google Play Beta Program. Reports suggest it may be rolled out to testers in the next few weeks and then finally available in a future stable update.
