Perplexity AI aims to take on Chrome with Comet Browser on smartphones

Summary
  • Perplexity AI is negotiating with smartphone makers like Samsung and Motorola to preinstall its AI-driven Comet browser.
  • Aiming to challenge Chrome’s 70% market share, Comet offers real-time answers, task automation, and AI integration.

Perplexity AI will go out of its way and preload a smartphone with its Comet browser to disrupt the mobile browsing market dominated by Google Chrome. CEO and Co-Founder Aravind Srinivas revealed in a Reuters interview that company has also been engaging in active discussions with smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and Motorola to incorporate the use of Comet as a default option.

Srinivas admitted that his task to convince mobile OEMs to ditch Chrome, currently holding a 70% market share, and replace it with browsers by Apple and Samsung that have a combined market share of 24 percent is going to be a real challenge.

Currently in beta for desktop, Comet is more than just a browser. It uses Perplexity AI to give instant responses and build complex tasks such as booking meetings, and can even communicate with personal information such as emails and browsing streams. This makes it belong in a new generation of agentic AI browsers, designed to act like digital assistants rather than traditional search tools.

Perplexity focuses on having tens and hundreds of millions of users in 2026 by using mobile partnerships as a growth booster. But this development is simultaneously an indication of change in digital marketing because, as search experiences powered by AI by Perplexity and Google reshape, search engine optimization (SEO) goes through its changes.

Small and medium businesses might need to adapt by focusing on structured data, verified listings, and AI platforms integration.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that OpenAI is developing an AI-based browser that will allow automated processes, such as travel booking and financial management, indicating a general industry change of thinking in the direction of smart browsing.
