Meta’s Threads to Introduce Hashtags and Trending Topics in Platform Update

Meta’s social networking application Threads is set to enhance user experience by introducing hashtags and trending topics, features that were notably absent at its launch. This move is part of a series of updates aimed at reviving the platform’s user base, which had seen a decline in recent months.

Threads, which positions itself as a competitor to Twitter, has been steadily rolling out new functionalities. Recent updates have included the ability for users to pin posts and manage their Threads accounts independently from Instagram, including the option to delete their Threads account without affecting their Instagram profile.

These improvements have contributed to an uptick in user engagement, with Threads witnessing a doubling of its daily and monthly active users. The platform now boasts 33 million daily active users and 120 million monthly active users.

The latest feature in testing is the use of hashtags will allow users to tag conversations or topics within their posts. Unlike the typical presentation of hashtags, Threads will display these as blue-text hyperlinks.

Currently, this feature is undergoing a “limited test” in Australia before it is rolled out globally. To maintain the platform’s streamlined aesthetic and prevent spamming, users will be limited to adding only one topic per post.

Meta’s commitment to refining Threads is evident, as the company has indicated that the initial version of the hashtag feature is not final and will evolve. While the platform is still far from reaching Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitious goal of 1 billion users, the introduction of hashtags and trending topics is a step towards making Threads a more robust and competitive social media platform.

As Threads continues to tick off the missing features from its launch, users can anticipate a more interactive and engaging environment, potentially drawing even more users back to the platform. With these strategic updates, Meta aims to solidify Threads’ position in the social media landscape and attract a broader audience.
